NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service
The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service allows people to access free, convenient, and confidential contraception directly from a community pharmacy, without needing a GP appointment. The service includes:
Starting oral contraception for the first time,
Ongoing monitoring and repeat supplies of the contraceptive pill, and
Free supply of oral emergency contraception, as part of the expanded service.
Pharmacists or trained pharmacy technicians provide a private consultation, assess clinical suitability, offer personalised advice, and support shared decision‑making. Individuals can self‑refer, be signposted by other NHS services, or be identified during another pharmacy consultation. All contraception supplied is free of charge, helping improve access and reduce health inequalities.
