Why Pharmacists Complete a Blister Pack Assessment
A blister pack assessment helps ensure patients receive the right support, at the right time, while still maintaining control and independence over their own medicines. Pharmacists use the assessment to understand an practical difficulties a patient may have-such as remembering doses, opening packaging, or managing complex regimens-and to explore whether these challenges can be resolved through advice, education, or simple adjustments rather than immediately moving to a monitored dosage system.
Blister packs are not always the best or safest solution, and in some cases can even reduce flexibility or lead to errors if they're not truly needed. By completing a structured assessment, the pharmacist can make sure that all options are considered, empowering the patient to stay involved in their own care, and only recommending a blister pack when it genuinely offers a meaningful benefit.
